Paris Day 1

Today was a travel day and there wasn’t much having to do with film besides a short walk around Paris at night where we saw the Midnight in Paris stairs which were cool, and I liked seeing how the street where the car came around the corner was crooked. It’s interesting the thought that gets put into locations and what sort of details can be considered cinematic.

That said this day was more interesting to me as a French Minor. I was put into a cab with two other students who didn’t speak French, and our English speaking cabbie dumped us into the middle of the street and ushered us into another cab with a driver who spoke very little English. It was an interesting experience to say the least. It was cool though, because I haven’t been tested like this in casual conversation in a long time, and I was happy with how I translated in my head without thinking a few times, like when the cabbie said he needed help with the bags because he had a bad back. I also gave him directions and had a short conversation with him about the protesters.

Dinner was another test of my French speaking skills, and I remember there was a moment when Professor Kost was trying to get me to ask the waiter one thing, telling it to me in English, and the waiter was trying to explain something entirely different in French, which was challenging, but I figured it out.
