Today was the free day. I had all sorts of grandiose plans for the day including crepes, Oscar Wilde’s grave, the Musee D’Orsay, and the Musee Rodin. I did one of these things. That being crepes. Everything closed after five and we got lost looking for crepes, (good crepes, not the thick tourist nonsense crepes) so when we finally sat down to eat it was 4:30 and too late to do anything. So I decided to go to Oscar Wilde’s grave. It took me almost an hour to get there by train and the cemetary was just closing. I felt awful for wasting a day in Paris, so when I got back I decided to watch Little Women again, since I adore that movie so much. I roped Will into it, and it was lovely to see it in a theatre again, especially during the scene where Amy burns Jo’s writing, that got a few horrified gasps out of the audience. It was also interesting to see what the French subtitles were compared to the dialogue. It was mostly accurate, but some translations were too simplistic, like when Jo finds out Amy and Laurie are married and Laurie says Amy calls him my Lord, Jo says “You look deserving of it.” In the French subtitles it only said “You look good.” It took away a bit of the emotional subtext, which I feel is a shame.
