London Day 3

Air Studios has probably been the highlight of the trip for me so far. My dad is a huge Beatles nerd and has instilled me with enough Beatles trivia to impress most adults. It was such a wild experience to be in a space that George Martin recorded in. It was a shame that the significance of that was lost on some of my peers who didn’t really like the Beatles that much, but I’m sure I would be the same in a huge recording studio for country artists. It never occured to me that so many American movies would be scored in the United Kingdom, but I suppose it doesn’t really matter where scores are recorded. I also thought it was cool that Abbey Road and Air Studios aren’t in competition with each other and pass clients between them freely when they don’t have space.

Talking to the American actor Ian Porter was interesting because it gave me my first glimpse into the British film industry from an American’s perspective. It was cool to hear about what kind of jobs he could get as an American, although I’m sure it’s much harder for actors than it would be for writers. The best bit of advice he gave is that when you’re a director you shouldn’t cast someone because they fit the role thinking you can make them a better actor.
